New Zealand is on the way
to Australia and about 1000 miles east of Sydney. As this is late winter
going on the way home may be better. A stopover in Auckland as
part of a round trip to Australia usually costs no more for a mileage or paid
        ticket.
        With limited time stay on
the North Island, rent a car and tour from Auckland. The volcanic area
of Rotorua is worth the trip and the coastal towns and scenery are
beautiful. It's very different from Australia.
        New Zealand has built a
reputation for adventure trips and these can be great for the wilder
tourists. It's the home of bungee jumping and has jet boats and many
        other active tourist options.
        The South Island has
spectacular mountains, skiing, fjords and lots more.
