The Great Barrier Reef is
usually high on everyone's list when visiting Australia and is truly
amazing. Many tours into the Reef for sightseeing, snorkeling and diving
are available
from the many towns and islands throughout this vast area .
The Reef is the world's largest and is composed of more than
2,900 individual reefs, includes over 900 islands, is about 1,600 miles
long and covers 133,000 square miles. Quite large...
The Reef parallels the mainland along the Queensland coast where there
are many points of interest including cool towns, rainforests, crocodile
habitats, resorts, wildlife parks, national parks and thousands of
miles of beaches.
There's so much to see and
do that links will provide the most options and current information.
Towns like Cairns on the mainland provide great places to stay and visit
the reef, see islands, rainforests and wildlife/crocodile habitats and
preserves or take dive trips.
South of the reef a nice side trip would include...
Fraser Island, quite unique: www.fraserisland.net
Noosa is a really cool town:

There's something for
everyone along the reef and so many options and choices that it's really
hard to suggest itineraries for this region. Check out the links, surf
around and send questions if you want to ask about specific ideas.
GreatBarrierReef.org
is quite comprehensive
and a good place to start.
